The Difference between Thong and G-string Micro Bikinis (The 2020 Update!)

Admit it, you had no idea that G-string bikinis and thong bikinis were not the same thing. Hey, don’t worry about it because you’re not alone! Most women have no idea that they’re quite different from one another. The good news is, we’re here to give you the 101 on sexy bikini bottoms so when you go shopping for a micro bikini, you’ll know exactly what to look for!

What is a Micro Bikini?

The microkini is the latest swimwear trend to hit the beaches this summer! As you may have already guessed, these are itsy bitsy pieces of cloth which are just enough to cover your crotch, your bum, and your nipples. Yep, you read that right! Nipples, not your breasts. So why are women all over the world going gaga over micro bikinis? Celebrities and Instagram influencers are wearing them, that’s why!

Let’s get into the design of the microkini some more.

It’s basically a traditional triangle bikini but with less fabric on the bikini top and bottoms. The cups of the top aren’t so much of a cup really but a small 2-3 inch diameter triangle that’s secured by strings and is only wide enough to cover your nipples. The bikini bottom is a choice between a G-string bikini and a thong. In our recent blog  ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Micro Bikinis’ it explains the detailed differences between the micro thong bikini. It’s important to note that a micro bikini has small coverage on both bottom and top. Most thong bikinis only have small coverage on the bottom.

Thong and G-string Bikini Bottoms: Which is Which?

Now here is where the confusion usually comes in – how can you tell a G-string from a thong? There are a few but very obvious differences between the two:

THE STRAP/STRING

Thong: Thongs have a thin strap which goes around from the front of the pelvis going the back and meets at the coccyx, forming a Y.

G-string: As the name suggests, G-strings have strings rather than straps and instead of forming a Y at the back, the strings meet to form a T.

FABRIC

Thong: Most thongs are made from lace or lyrca but they also come in cotton fabric. They’re usually double lined with string style bottoms that tie on the sides.

G-string: These are often made from very thin, sometimes very sheer fabric. Some are even made from mesh. The fabric ranges from polyester to spandex. The micro g string doesn’t usually have tie-side bottoms, but a continuous strap that forms a T in the back.

PURPOSE

Thong: Thong bikinis are perfect for any body type, big or small, because they accentuate both large and small booties. Thong bikini bottoms can be dressed-up to be more conservative when paired with a full coverage bikini top. These bikinis are versatile for many occasions and venues and are widely accepted in many beaches.

G-string: G string bikinis usually come sold as a bikini set - both top and bottoms. Unlike the thong bikini, G string bikinis are harder to pair with other full coverage bikini tops because they’re so tiny. It would be like wearing socks with your flip flops, they just don’t quite match. Thong bikinis are nothing new in places like Miami, Hawaii, and other private beaches around the world. G-strings, on the other hand, still need a bit of time before they’re fully accepted into society. Make sure to do a bit of research on the beach you’re thinking of heading to before you start packing your skimpy bikini. Many people who opt for the G string bikini are going to exclusive beaches in Mexico, Jamaica, and the like. They love the minimal tan lines and freedom they provide.

Take into consideration the activities you’ll be doing when wearing a micro g string bikini. If you plan on doing some aqua sports, you may want to scratch the microkini idea altogether. You wouldn’t want a “wardrobe malfunction” while you’re surfing, would you? However, you might still get away with it if you put on a pair of shorts and a rashguard before you head out.

String Bikinis Swimwear: Are They Appropriate Enough to Be Worn in a Public Beach?

Let’s get this out of the way – no, microkinis are not appropriate beach wear. Most public beaches won’t allow women to wear sheer bikinis because it makes other people uncomfortable seeing nudity – plus, it’s not really something that should be worn in places where there are kids playing around. Unless, you’re immune to getting terrifying looks from people who are a little more on the conservative side.

On the other hand, micro bikinis can be worn at private adult pool parties or at nude beaches. In fact, if you wore one to a nude beach, you will probably be tagged as overdressed. However, it’s still a good choice if you aren’t comfortable enough to go butt-naked. G string bikinis are completely acceptable at adult beaches or any venue where kids are not allowed.

Why Are Micro Bikinis So Popular?

Dopamine and celebrities are to thank for in the rise in popularity for micro bikinis. In 2020, we're expected to see a rise in thong bikini bottoms and g string bottoms due to the micro bikini fashion trend. If you have any access to social media, you've undoubtedly noticed the swell in Instagram influencers and celebrities like Kylie Jenner wearing thong bikinis by the pool. Women love wearing micro bikinis for the attention that's received from onlookers when worn in a public or private space. This attention creates dopamine (the promise of a reward) in the form of praise from a husband, boyfriend, or onlookers who just can't look away. If you’re fortunate enough to have access to a private beach or swimming pool, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t wear a micro bikini! But if you need additional reasons too, these might help make up your mind:

They’re sexy and playful. A micro bikini is basically the swimwear version of sexy lingerie. If you and your partner had a swimming pool all to yourselves, wouldn’t you want to wear something seductive and sensual while you’re swimming? Of course, you would!

Little to no tan lines. While getting some color on your skin is always a good idea, not too many people are fond of the untanned areas underneath their swimsuits at the end of the day. A micro bikini solves this problem for you because it only covers the parts you would never show the public anyway.

A boost of confidence. Nothing will give a woman a boost of confidence better than wearing a piece of clothing she feels and looks good in and that includes a super sexy bikini. While women would never welcome sleazy advances and catcalling, turning a few heads while they walk-by will always be a huge ego boost. Who wouldn’t want to catch a glimpse of a lady wearing a super sexy swimsuit? We’re guessing no one.

I Don’t Think My Body’s Good Enough for a Sexy Bikini

Ah, now we get to the part where we discuss the insecurities of almost every woman in the world. Yep, that’s right! Every woman has something to complain about when it comes to her body. Cellulite, stretch marks, scars, love handles, etc… you name it!

Newsflash: EVERYBODY HAS THEM!

Do these flaws make you any less of a woman? No! Does this mean you need to cover up at the beach? Absolutely not! In this day and age, it’s time to start embracing your flaws and flaunting them instead of covering them up. Reality is, even supermodels have flaws. It’s just that we don’t see them when they’re wearing skimpy swimsuits in magazine because they’ve already been airbrushed off through this powerful tool called Photoshop.

The biggest question you need to ask yourself when it comes to deciding whether you can pull off a sexy bikini is whether you feel comfortable enough in your own body. It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 16. If you see yourself as a sensual, powerful being, others will see you that way too! So go ahead and get yourself a neon pink microkini, we’re sure you’ll look phenomenal in it!

Remember, how others see you is an extension of how you see yourself.
